Two city fast-food joints are calling themselves Obama Fried Chicken - and the new names are ruffling some feathers.

Eateries in Brooklyn and Manhattan plastered the new President's last name on their awnings recently.

And some passersby are cringing, saying the name change plays into old racial stereotypes.

"Why name it that? Just because Obama is black, they're going to put his name on a fried chicken place in a black neighborhood?" said Akilah Nassy, 16, outside the Brooklyn store.

"If it were [Republican candidate John] McCain, nobody would make a McCain fried chicken place."

Several weeks ago, S&T Fried Chicken on St. Nicholas Ave. in Harlem formally renamed itself after the country's first black President.

And last week, Royal Fried Chicken on Rutland Road in Brownsville, Brooklyn, did the same.

Staff at both eateries say the names are meant to pay homage to the new President, not offend customers or capitalize on his popularity.

"Basically, the owner loves Obama," said Mohammad Jabbar, 33, manager of the Brownsville store. "He loves him seriously. He supports him."

Some customers in Brooklyn said it didn't matter what the owners' intentions were - the new President's name shouldn't be there.

"They think because they throw up Obama's name, black people are going to come in more to get fried chicken," said Seth DeVries, 28, a roofer from Brownsville.

Beyond the racial overtones, some critics found it distasteful that a business would try to make a profit from a historic election. "You see a lot of that in this area - slapping Obama's name on businesses to make money," said Khayeen Adams Sr., a furniture store employee in Brooklyn.

In Harlem, the reaction was very different. Business was brisk, and few customers seemed offended at the restaurant, which placed a portrait of the First Family near the cash register.

However, student Skyler McCrimmon, 17, thought the name might be more appropriate "if it were a fancy restaurant."

And Alphonso Brown, 52, joked that naming a business after a politician could be problematic.

"Right now, Obama's popular, but if his ratings go down, maybe they'll change the name again," he said.

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- Rap star T.I. was sentenced in Atlanta federal court Friday to one year and one day in prison and ordered to pay a $100,300 fine on weapons charges related to purchasing machine guns and silencers.

T.I., whose real name is Clifford Harris, has mentored at-risk students as part of his community service.

The rapper, whose real name is Clifford Harris, reached the terms of the sentence in a plea agreement with prosecutors last year.

"I would like to say thank you to some, and apologize to others," Harris said at his sentencing.

"In my life, I have been placed in the worst-case scenario and had to make the best of it," he said. "Most often, things I have learned have been from trial and error. I knew no way to protect myself than to arm myself."

He was dressed in a gray suit and black shirt and tie.

Harris, 28, also was sentenced to some property forfeiture, supervised release for three years after his prison sentence, 365 days of home confinement and 1,500 hours of community service. He has already served 305 days of home confinement and 1,030 hours of service.

Former Atlanta Mayor and U.N. Ambassador Andrew Young spoke on behalf of Harris, comparing black-on-black violence to the Ku Klux Klan decades ago. Young said he regarded working with Harris not so much as a chance to help him but more as "an opportunity for him to help me."

"We hit it off immediately," Young said. "It was a grandfather type of relationship."

Bishop Eddie Long of the New Birth Baptist Church also spoke in support of Harris.

Harris will be taken into custody no earlier than May 19.

The plea agreement, which federal authorities called unique, allowed the rapper to remain out of prison for a year while he performed community service.

In that time, he mentored at-risk students at 58 schools, 12 Boys & Girls Clubs, nine churches and many other nonprofit organizations, according to court documents.

Young said he and Harris went to a hospital for paraplegics in New York.

"He heard the testimonies of guys in their 50s and 60s who talked about being shot back when they were 16," Young said. "A perfect example for me in my ministry, and that wouldn't be possible without the willingness of this court to try new things."

Meanwhile, the rapper has released his sixth CD, "Paper Trail," which has sold close to 2 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

The multiplatinum rapper also has starred in the MTV reality show, "T.I.'s Road to Redemption: 45 Days to Go," which chronicles his efforts to shave years off his sentence by completing his community service. The show features him talking to schools and community groups "about how to avoid the trouble he now finds himself in," according to the network's Web site.

Harris' fall from grace was sudden and dramatic, played out on the streets of his hometown of Atlanta in 2007.

That year, Harris had starred in the film "ATL" and could be seen in Chevy commercials with NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Harris had been named to the Forbes list of top-earning rappers, banking an estimated $16 million in 2006.

Then he was arrested in October 2007 in an Atlanta parking lot hours before he was to perform at the BET Hip Hop Awards.

Harris was caught in a federal sting after his bodyguard-turned-informant delivered three machine guns and two silencers to him, prosecutors said.

The rapper had provided the bodyguard with $12,000 to buy the weapons. Harris was not permitted to own any guns, however, because he was convicted in 1998 on felony drug charges -- possession of crack cocaine with intent to distribute -- in Cobb County, in suburban Atlanta.

For his court hearing Friday, Harris' attorneys submitted more than 100 letters from officials who thanked him for his community service since the weapons arrest.

One of the letters was from Georgia Supreme Court Chief Justice Leah Ward Sears, who said Harris did an "outstanding job" talking to a group of teenagers about not breaking the law.

"If only one young person in that courtroom listened to Mr. Harris -- and I believe they all did -- we are all better for it," Sears wrote. "He was honest, humble and inspirational."

iPod Shuffle-3rd Generation

Well my iPod classic is still sitting at home and my mom keeps forgetting to send it to me so I decided to buy a shuffle.

Yes. I SAID SHUFFLE, even though I can not see anything and it only holds 1,000 songs and I have 4132 songs and 232 movies/videos I needed something until May and it's not that bad.

Apple just released this iPod about two weeks ago so I decided to buy it and I really like it.

The thing about this iPod is that even though you can not see anything the headphones are the main focus of the iPod. It has a little remote on it which allows you change the volume, the song and the playlist. It also has a new feature called VoiceOver that allows you to hear the song that is playing while you are listening to it.

It's $79 and I enjoy having it until I get my classic back in May.

with my free time I have been able to read books for fun..i have not done this in past year

so far I was able to borrow Sister Souljah's new book Midnight

Her first The Coldest Winter Ever was CRAZY, so I knew had to read this one
I also just ordered A.L.T:A Memoir, which is the memoir of Andre Leon Talley
I am into fashion but not a fashionista..but for some reason I feel like I have to read his memoir

The negative of having so much free time I feel like I forgot to do something or that I need to do it over. Oh well hopefully I can still learn about time management and how to balance everything out.

Chris Brown Investigated for Alleged Assault

Law enforcement sources tell TMZ Chris Brown is being investigated by the LAPD in an alleged assault on a female.

According to police, Brown and an unnamed woman were arguing inside of a vehicle around 12:30 this morning when suddenly things turned violent.

Cops say they received a 911 call, and when they arrived they noticed the woman had visible injuries and identified Brown as her attacker. Cops say Brown had left the scene by the time police arrived.

so the Delta's and AKA's had their unity party last nite which was poppin

for the first time since i been in greencastle there was REGGAE MUSIC..i was so fcukin happy,you have no idea how good it feels to hear that instead of some slow ass baby making music but anyway

i had on my dress from homecoming that was already short but since I grew this summer it got even shorter.....and some black knee high boots..yes i was looking cute :-D

anyway the party was live..the Alphas,Zetas,Sigmas,Ques,SgRho's,and Kappas was there (sorry if I left you out)..but the reason I liked this party was that everyone was dancing and strolling it wasn't only one thing

but damn it sure did get hot FAST!!!

the party was over at 2:13...and i ain get in my bed til 4..from talking a Que that almost killed me the last time I saw him and then chilling with the people in my dorm

Aubrey started off on one of my favorite TV shows Degrassi:The Next Generation (which I still watch lol). While on Degrassi he started to get into the music scence and became Drake. At first I was skeptical about his music career but he is really good. He has done collaborations with Lil Wayne and Trey Songs,just to name a few.

I feel that he is iCandy because his sex appeal is there and it is obvious. He has always been cute since Degrassi and has grew up A LOT..in a good way!!

last nite was the first party since spring semester started and what a way to start it off..while everyone else was rushing me and my girls was at the alpha phi alpha party starting trouble

we get there early to try the infamous "ape juice"..all i can say is that it didn't hit me and my girls til later that nite

THAT PARTY WAS CRAZY!!!

let me tell you what happened..the floor caved in!!!
seriously the house is not that sturdy so with like 50 people in your house jumping up and down and juking and dubbing it was gonna happen lol

then the cops come to shut it down..but it didn't work..that party went on til 4am

my voice is gone my hair was sweated out to the point where I found new growth that I never seen before (lol)

The movie was damn good and I wonder when they shot it because I live on Lafayette and St.James Place and Biggie lived on St.James Place and Fulton which is only two blocks away..Diddy was actually right for once because the movie made me laugh and cry...the only thing that got me was the sex was a little too graphic like we knew about BIG and Kim but come on they OVERDID IT..otherwise it was a REAL GOOD movie...

since I been back from Indiana..being back in nyc is making me realize why I left in the first place..uggh

like don't get me wrong I LOVE BROOKLYN and like i love my neighborhood its so diverse and original but once i step out of it all i see are clones...everyone looks the same or tries to look the same...it seems that my generation is caught up with MONEY..like don't get me wrong i like to have money but im not gonna spend it on something that someone else or that everyone else has

i feel that they assume if they look like they got money it makes them more important WRONG...in brooklyn someone well assume "oh their fly or have money" but to the brands that you are wearing they are saying thank you for spending hundreds of dollars on clothes that are already out of season or out of style and to corporate america you are just another consumer and not important

before you spend think about why you are really spending it..is it because everyone else has it and you want to "Fit In" or is it because you want to look like have money???

I LOVED IT!!!!
even though the movie is almost three hours long it is so good....there were so many different points in the movie where I wanted to cry or had tears in my eyes.

The tagline of the movie stuck with me and it has a deeper meaning depending on how you interpret it..

XXL Magazine recently put a article on their website (click on the picture to go to the website) discussing how Voletta Wallace (Biggie's Mom) felt about the way that her son treated Lil Kim and many other things that she did not know about him until she saw the movie. Here is the full article:

Voletta Wallace, Biggie’s mother, is concerned about her son’s former relationship with Lil’ Kim. During the making of her son’s biopic, Notorious, she learned more about the two rapper’s infamous connection, and was not happy.

In an interview with Essence, Wallace revealed that she discoverd a lot about her son during the movie’s filming. “There were things about him [B.I.G.] that I never knew that I wanted to see for myself on film,” she said. “I saw a side of my son that I heard of but I haven’t accepted. I’m angered by certain things, disappointed and shocked. So this film taught me tolerance and to be less critical.”

She was especially surprised with the way B.I.G. treated Kim. “I would love to speak to Lil’ Kim, because I need to ask more about this love relationship because I really didn’t like the way he treated her and I’m praying that that’s not it,” she continued. “Only she can answer those questions. She’s a sweet girl and I didn’t think she deserved to be treated the way he treated her, if that’s the case.”

Wallace’s comments come days after Lil’ Kim announced her disapproval of her portrayal in the movie and dissed Biggie’s mother and widow in an interview with Hip-Hop Weekly.

“I’ve had enough and I’m about to expose them both … I’ve been quiet for a long time,” Lil’ Kim said in the magazine, hitting stands this month. “I’m very disappointed in Faith,” she added. “There’s nothing Faith or Ms. Wallace could do to stop me from reppin’ B.I.G. all day. I’m gonna always do that … It’s time for Ms. Wallace to be exposed.”

Topshop is Finally Opening

Some of you may not know but in my opinion it is one of the best stores in the world..hehe.Topshop's are overseas in Europe but NYC (ie Soho) will soon have one. Topshop was suppose to orignally open in October but due to construction delays it was pushed to March. The date that it has it's opening party is MARCH 26TH AT 9PM!!!! hopefully it's just not a party for celebs because I want to shop!!!

There are talks underway for a Broadway musical to be made based on Mariah Carey's life. The buzz is that British singer Leona Lewis would play Mariah. The Telegraph says Mariah is secretly fond of that idea.

"But Mariah secretly likes the idea of Leona Lewis playing her.

"Not only is she exotic, she's the only one who they reckon would be able to tackle Mariah's eight-octave vocal range."

A spokeswoman confirmed: "Mariah is in talks for a Broadway musical to be made about her life in 2009."

Carey apparently only agreed to the show after a heart-to-heart with her husband Nick Cannon on their Christmas holiday in Aspen this year.

You can tell that Leona Lewis does have the range if you listen to her Bleeding Love single. Other sources say its still possible Mariah could take the role herself or it could be played by another actress such as Vanessa Hudgens or Eva Longoria.

today is the first post of 2009 and I have a lot to say about my night..hehe

after me and my mommy said our resolutions and watched the ball drop,it was time for me to go out...then all the cell phones stopped working so at that moment my night was about to end in my house

THANKFULLY they started working again...i met up my friends arielle,taznay,and danielle...all of them was GONE...so we get to the party and its a whole bunch of kids thats still in HS..so im like iite imma see this is gonna go...all of a sudden I had a flashback to my party when dudes is a about to start fighting and im like OMFG..this shit is blowin mines....so we left walked to fulton and got some popeyes,after the popeyes run we came back to the party because it was cold AS HELL outside...I'm skipping mad details because they not important...but any way some of my sons that's still in HS there friend actually got my number and I'm like how old are you and he was like "im 17",i was like damn u still a baby..he was like na i can do grown man things though and im like you gotta be kidding me but I ended up giving him my number and then he WILD tried TO KISS ME (smhhhhh) but he was cute...after that we basically left the cab and taznay and danielle wanted a cab so these fools stopped EVERY car that drove by and almost got hit by every car that went by...we finally got a cab and then when I get home i realized I left my phone in the cab thank god taznay was still in the cab...

Brooklyn We Go Hard as I posted a few days ago is the first single off the Notorious B.I.G. Soundtrack,well his 12 yr-old Christopher "CJ" Wallace will be on the soundtrack for the movie about his dad (awwwww). Here is the article from AOL:The Boombox:

Tuesday we posted the Kanye West-produced track, 'Brooklyn Go Hard,' with Jay-Z, featuring Santogold, from the upcoming 'Notorious' soundtrack, and now, we've just learned that the album will feature a surprise guest: Notorious B.I.G's 12-year-old son, Christopher "CJ" Wallace.

CJ joins Jay, Jadakiss and Faith Evans on the soundtrack, that film producer Wayne Barrow has confirmed will also feature three previously unreleased Biggie Demos. "We kept everything as is, in its raw form. This is what got him the [recording] deal, plain and simple. His fans have been asking for it for years...It's incredible stuff," Director George Tillman Jr. explained in a recent interview.

As for young CJ's involvement with the project, Big's son will appear on a remix of his big papa's classic 'One More Chance,' which has been described as "emotional," so we can only guess what that means.

William Balfour was finally arrested today for the Hudson Family killings.

CHICAGO (Dec. 1) - Police arrested the estranged brother-in-law of Jennifer Hudson on Monday in the deaths of the entertainer's mother, brother and young nephew, taking him from a prison where he had been held on a suspected parole violation.

William Balfour was arrested at Stateville Correctional Center and released to detectives as he awaited formal charges in the shooting deaths of the singer and Oscar-winning actress' relatives, said Chicago police spokeswoman Monique Bond.

Until Monday, police had identified Balfour, 27, only as a "person of interest" in the investigation. He had not been charged by late Monday afternoon, said Andy Conklin, a spokesman for the Cook County state's attorney's office.

The bodies of Jennifer Hudson's mother, Darnell Hudson Donerson, and brother, Jason Hudson, were discovered Oct. 24 at the family's home on the South Side of Chicago. The body of 7-year-old Julian King was found three days later in a sport utility vehicle on the West Side. All three had been shot.

Police took Balfour into custody the same day the bodies of Donerson and Hudson were discovered. After 48 hours — the longest Chicago police can hold a person without charges — Balfour was taken by the Illinois Department of Corrections on the suspected parole violation. Balfour — Julian's stepfather and the estranged husband of Jennifer Hudson's older sister, Julia Hudson — served seven years for a 1999 attempted murder and vehicular hijacking conviction. His mother, Michelle Balfour of Chicago, has denied that her son had anything to do with the deaths. Telephone numbers for Balfour's mother and sister were disconnected Monday. Balfour had refused to take a lie-detector test and stopped cooperating with detectives in the case, a police official, who was not authorized to discuss the case publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity, has said.

Police have confirmed they found the gun used in the killings. The .45-caliber gun was discovered Oct. 29 in a vacant lot in the West Side neighborhood where the King's body was found a few days earlier.

Bond declined to discuss any evidence Monday. But after a hearing at the prison, the chairman of the Illinois Prisoner Review Board said a woman had told authorities that a gun used in the slayings was "identical" to the gun that was recovered.

At the time, board Chairman Jorge Montes said the evidence was key to a decision finding probable cause that Balfour violated his parole and should remain locked up pending a Dec. 3 hearing before a review board panel.

Balfour did not have an attorney at the November hearing, and the Cook County public defender's office said at the time that nobody from the office had been assigned because he was not formally charged with a crime.

No one in the public defender's office was assigned to Balfour's case late Monday, and it was not clear whether he had other representation.

In honor of Black History Month, we’re honoring one of the foremost leaders and thinkers in Black America today: Dr. Cornel West.

Dr. Cornel West is an Ivy League-educated professor of religion and African-American studies at Princeton University. A renown, controversial philosopher, orator, scholar and activist, Dr. West has written close to 20 profoundly influential books on the topics of race, politics, culture and religion, including the best-selling book, Race Matters.

It’s not unusual to see West — a cancer survivor and the son of a Baptist minister — keeping company with everyone from students to senators, rabbis to rappers. In fact, West has a hand in making hip-hop music too: aside from his involvement with Russell Simmons’s Hip-Hop Summit, West has two albums to his name.

On his first album, Sketches of My Culture, released in 2001, he skillfully set the ramifications of slavery to soulful spoken word grooves. On his latest album, Never Forget: A Journey of Revelations, released in 2007 with the Black Men Who Mean Business, he set his thoughts on being Black in post-9/11 Bush Country to funk, soul and hip-hop rhythms. Joining him: hip-hop and R&B heavy-hitters Prince (one of the first times the artist has ever allowed his work to be sampled), Jill Scott, Talib Kweli, KRS-One, Andre 3000, Killer Mike and the late Gerald Levert.

“This isn’t commentary on hip-hop,” West told Billboard.com. “This is a very political album that doesn’t pull any punches… There are critiques of the Bush administration as well as of unaccountable corporate power, unaccountable police power and homophobia. We’re trying to get young people to wake up and recognize they’re part of the great tradition of struggle, to become organized and fight for freedom of justice.”

This is hip-hop of the deepest, highest order intended to raise awareness, open minds, influence and inspire. As he told the Baltimore Sun, “Hip-hop is a powerful cultural force that can be used as a link to freedom. We’ve always had a group of prophetic musicians that fused the social, political and historical. Hip-hop as a force of change that may not speak directly to the Curtis Mayfield generation, but it speaks to young people and their children. And, my brother, we can’t give up on our young people.”

For his MTV Artist of the Week on-air videos, Dr. West and a few famous friends took that message directly to the schools, directly to the children — specifically to Grace A. Dunn Middle School in Trenton, New Jersey. There, he schooled the young students in Black history, race and class, the Wu-Tang Clan and, above all else, how to lead a respectful, righteous life.

The state Board of Elections says that Sen. Barack Obama got shafted in the New York primary. In fact, The New York Daily News reports, several districts actually show that zero votes were recorded for Obama, when in reality he had gotten hundreds. In nearly 80 districts – even in mega-Black Harlem – he got zilch, while in other largely Black districts the tallies were far off the mark. At first, results in the 94th district, where Harlem is seated, showed a 141-0 sweep for Hillary Clinton, but a recount changed the tally to 261-136, according to the News. Describing the miscalculations as “outrageous,” Brooklyn City Councilman Charles Barron told the paper, “I think this is an all-out effort to stop a campaign that is about to make history and render America’s first Black president. We need some kind of independent or federal agency to investigate this.”
